He was counted among the celebrated Companions who had settled in Basra.
It is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed his hand over his head and said, “O Allah, endow him with beauty.”
He lived to be one hundred years old, and only a few strands of his hair ever turned white. (1)
In Basra there is a mosque that bears his name. (2)
He transmitted hadiths directly from the Prophet ﷺ and fought alongside him in thirteen campaigns. (3)
Among those who narrated from him are his son Bashīr, Yazīd al-Rishk, ʿIlbāʾ ibn Aḥmar, Abū Qilābah al-Jarmī, Anas ibn Sīrīn, and others.
His reports appear in the hadith compilations other than Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.
He died during the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān.

(1) Reported by al-Tirmidhi (3629, “Virtues”) through Muḥammad b. Bashshār → Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl → ʿAzrah b. Thābit → ʿAlbāʾ b. Aḥmar: “Abū Zayd b. Akhṭab related, ‘The Messenger of Allah passed his hand over my face and prayed for me.’” ʿAzrah adds: “He lived to one hundred and twenty years and had only a few white hairs.” The narration is also in Ahmad, al-Musnad 5/77, 341. Al-Tirmidhi graded it ḥasan; Ibn Ḥibbān (2274) and al-Ḥākim declared it ṣaḥīḥ, and their judgment is sound. Ahmad transmits a similar version at 5/340 by another chain, authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān (2273).

مِنْ مَشَاهِيْرِ الصَّحَابَةِ الَّذِيْنَ نَزَلُوا البَصْرَةَ.
رُوِيَ أَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ، وَقَالَ: (اللَّهُمَّ جَمِّلْهُ) .
فَبَلَغَ مائَةَ سَنَةٍ، وَمَا ابْيَضَّ مِنْ شَعْرِهِ إِلاَّ اليَسِيْرُ (١) .
وَلَهُ بِالْبَصْرَةِ مَسْجِدٌ يُعْرَفُ بِهِ (٢) .
رَوَى عَنِ: النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَحَادِيْثَ، وَغَزَا مَعَهُ ثَلاَثَ عَشْرَةَ غَزْوَةً (٣) .
حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ: ابْنُهُ؛ بَشِيْرٌ، وَيَزِيْدُ الرِّشْكُ، وَعِلْبَاءُ بنُ أَحْمَرَ، وَأَبُو قِلاَبَةَ الجَرْمِيُّ، وَأَنَسُ بنُ سِيْرِيْنَ، وَجَمَاعَةٌ.
حَدِيْثُهُ فِي الكُتُبِ سِوَى (صَحِيْحِ البُخَارِيِّ) .
تُوُفِّيَ: فِي خِلاَفَةِ عَبْدِ المَلِكِ بنِ مَرْوَانَ.

النبيل، عن عزرة بن ثابت، عن علباء بن أحمر، حدثنا أبو زيد بن أخطب، قال: مسح رسول الله ﷺ يده على وجهي ودعا لي.
قال عزرة: إنه عاش مئة وعشرين سنة، وليس في رأسه إلا شعرات بيض.
وهو في " المسند " ٥ / ٧٧ و٣٤١، وحسنه الترمذي، وصححه ابن حبان (٢٢٧٤) والحاكم، وهو كما قالوا.
وأخرجه أحمد ٥ / ٣٤٠ من طريق آخر بنحوه، وصححه ابن حبان (٢٢٧٣) .
