Her son:
99 – ʿAmr ibn al-Zubayr*
He transmitted hadith from his father.
He paid a formal visit to Muʿāwiyah, yet there was hostility and a complete break between him and his brother ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr.
He was remarkably handsome, powerfully built, daring, and formidable.
Whenever he sat down, he would cast his staff onto the tiled floor (1), and no one would step beyond it without his permission; and he had
= Transmitted through al-Fadl b. Dukayn and Hisham Abu al-Walid al-Tiyalisi with the same chain. Al-Bukhari also recorded it, 10/236, Book of Dress, “Chapter on the Black Khamisa,” through Abu Nuaym al-Fadl b. Dukayn; and 10/256, “Chapter on the Supplication for Someone Who Puts on a New Garment,” through Abu al-Walid al-Tiyalisi – both from Ishaq b. Saʿid with this chain.
Al-Bukhari likewise included it 6/128, Book of Jihad, “Chapter on Speaking Persian or a Foreign Tongue,” and in the Book of Manners, “Chapter on Leaving Someone Else’s Child to Play with You,” 10/356, through Hibban b. Musa, from ʿAbd Allah, from Khalid b. Saʿid, from his father, from Umm Khalid. It is also found 7/145, Book of the Virtues of the Companions, “Chapter on the Emigration to Abyssinia,” through al-Humaydi, from Sufyan, from Ishaq b. Saʿid, from his father, from Umm Khalid. Abu Dawud records it (4024) through Ishaq b. al-Jarrah, from Abu al-Nadr, from Ishaq b. Saʿid …
His words abli (wear it out) – with an initial hamza, a silent b, and a kasra on the l – are an imperative meaning “wear it until it is worn out.” Likewise akhlaqi – with a qaf – is another imperative with the same sense. The Arabs use both expressions as a supplication for long life, i.e. “may you live so long that the garment wears out.”
Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) says that in Abu Zayd al-Marwazi’s narration from al-Firabri the wording is akhlafi, with an f, which is preferable because the first version merely repeats the same sense—both iblaʾ and ikhlaq mean “to wear out,” and the conjunction only varies the wording—whereas the second adds the further idea that when she wears it out, Allah will replace it with another. This wording is supported by what Abu Dawud related (4020) with a sound chain from Abu Nadra: whenever one of the Prophet’s Companions put on a new garment, people would say to him, “Wear it out and may Allah replace it.”
