Al-Bukhari and Muslim likewise report—through ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ, from his father, from al-Aʿmash, who said: Ibrāhīm narrated to us, from Abū Maʿmar, from ʿAbd Allah—that he said: “The moon split while we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. One half appeared beyond the mountain and the other on this side, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Bear witness.’” The two compilers also transmit it through Shuʿbah from al-Aʿmash.
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī states in his Musnad: Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from Mughīrah, from Abū al-Ḍaḥḥā, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allah, who said: “The moon split during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Quraysh exclaimed, ‘This is the sorcery of Ibn Abī Kabshah! Wait for the caravans that are coming, for Muhammad cannot bewitch all people.’ When the travellers arrived, they confirmed it.”
Hushaym transmitted the same report from Mughīrah with similar wording.
Bakr ibn Muḍar related—from Jaʿfar ibn Rabīʿah, from ʿArāk ibn Mālik, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUtbah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that he said: “The moon split in the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” This wording is agreed upon and comes through Bakr’s chain.
Shuʿbah narrated—from al-Aʿmash, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar—concerning the verse, “The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split” (54:1): “That occurred during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: the moon split into two halves—one this side of the mountain and one beyond it—and the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘O Allah, bear witness.’” Muslim records this report.
Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān and Hushaym both narrated—through Ḥuṣayn, from Jubayr ibn Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, from his grandfather—who said: “The moon split while we were in Mecca during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Abū Kudaynah and al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Yūnus transmitted the same tradition with identical wording.
