and that he fought the killers of Ḥusayn.
Abū al-Tufayl was regarded as a trustworthy narrator—truthful, knowledgeable, a poet, and a seasoned horseman. He lived to a great age and fought alongside ʿAlī in his campaigns.
Khalīfah said: “He stayed in Mecca until he died in the year 100 AH, or thereabouts—so he stated.” He then added, “It is also said that it was 107 AH.” (1)
Al-Bukhārī (2) reported: “Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us—Mubārak narrated to us—from Kathīr ibn Aʿyan, who said, ‘Abū al-Tufayl informed me in Mecca in the year 107 AH.’”
Wahb ibn Jarīr said: “I heard my father say, ‘I was in Mecca in the year 110 AH when I saw a funeral procession. I asked whose it was, and they said, ‘This is Abū al-Tufayl.’” (3)
I say: this is the sound date of his death, for it is firmly established and corroborated by the preceding reports. Had anyone after him been granted as many years beyond the Prophet ﷺ as he was, that person would have lived until a little past 200 AH.
