The Splitting of the Moon
Allah the Exalted says:
“The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split. Yet if they see a sign they turn away and say, ‘Continuous sorcery!’ and they reject the truth and follow their own desires.” (Q 54:1-3)
Shayban narrated from Qatadah, from Anas, that the people of Mecca asked the Prophet ﷺ to show them a sign, so he showed them the splitting of the moon—twice. Both al-Bukhari and Muslim record this report through Shayban, though al-Bukhari does not mention the phrase “twice.”
Maʿmar also related from Qatadah, from Anas, the same account, adding: “and it split into two halves.” Al-Bukhari transmits something similar through Ibn Abi ʿArubah, from Qatadah, and both compilers include it through Shuʿbah, from Qatadah.
Ibn ʿUyaynah and others narrated from Ibn Abi Najiḥ, from Mujahid, from Abu Maʿmar, from Ibn Masʿud, who said: “I saw the moon in Mecca split into two parts—one half over Mount Abu Qubays and the other over al-Suwaydāʾ—before the Prophet’s migration. The people said, ‘He has bewitched the moon.’”
This is the wording given by ʿAbd al-Razzaq from Ibn ʿUyaynah; by “before the Prophet’s migration” he meant before his departure for Medina.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim both relate it through Ibn ʿUyaynah with the wording: “The moon split during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ into two halves, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Bear witness.’”
