Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Qudāmah was based in Najd. He lived on past the year 80 AH. I know of no one who narrated from him except Ayman the Abyssinian, the Meccan (1). The report is recorded in Sunan al-Nasa’i, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, the compilation of al-Qazwini, and in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad; it reaches us through an elevated ijāzah (scholarly licence).

91 – Sufyān ibn Wahb al-Khawlānī, Abū Ayman al-Miṣrī *
A Companion of advanced age, Abū Ayman al-Khawlānī, the Egyptian.
He transmitted a hadith from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—which appears in the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and in the collection of Baqī (2).

(1) Ibn Hajar states in al-Isabah, 3/277, that Humayd ibn Kilab also transmitted from him, which calls into question the assertion of Muslim, al-Hakim, al-Azdi and others that Ayman was his sole transmitter. For biographical details, see: Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqat 7/440; al-Bukhari, Tarikh al-Kabir 4/87; Yaʿqub ibn Sufyan, Maʿrifa wa-l-Tarikh 2/487; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 4/217; Ibn Hibban, Mashahir ʿUlamaʾ al-Amsar, no. 922; Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh 7/191 A; Ibn al-Athir, Usd al-Ghabah 2/410; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam 3/251; al-Safadi, al-Wafi bi-l-Wafayat 15/282; Ibn Hajar, al-Isabah 2/58; Ibn Hajar, Taʿjil al-Manfaʿah p. 106; Ibn ʿAsakir, Tahdhib 6/187. (2) Ahmad records the report in his Musnad, 4/168, through Ibn Luhayʿa: “Abu ʿAshanah told me that Sufyan ibn Wahb al-Khawlani related to him that he was standing in the shade of the riding beast of the Messenger of Allah during the Farewell Pilgrimage—or that a man told him so—while the Prophet was delivering the sermon. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Have I conveyed (the message)?’ We thought he meant us and replied, ‘Yes.’ He repeated it three times and then added: ‘An afternoon outing (rawhah) in the path of Allah is better than the world and all that it contains, and a morning outing (ghadwah) in the path of Allah is better than the world and all that it contains. The believer is sacrosanct to another believer—his honour, his wealth and his life—as inviolable as this very day.’” Ibn Luhayʿa is weak, whereas the remaining narrators are reliable. Al-Tabarani (no. 6404) transmits it through Ibn Wahb → ʿAmr ibn al-Harith → Abu ʿAshanah → Sufyan ibn Wahb, omitting the phrase “The believer is sacrosanct…,” with a trustworthy chain. Other corroborating narrations: from Anas with the wording, “A morning or an afternoon in the path of Allah is better than the world and everything in it”; from Sahl ibn Saʿd (both Sahihs); from Abu Hurayrah (Muslim); and from Ibn ʿAbbas (Tirmidhi).

" ورجاله ثقات. وفي الباب عن أنس بلفظ " غدوة في سبيل الله أو روحة، خير من الدنيا وما فيها ". وعن سهل بن سعد متفق عليهما، وعن أبي هريرة عند مسلم، وعن ابن عباس عند الترمذي.
