You betrayed ʿAmr, O Banū Khayṭ Bāṭil—
every one of you builds his house on treachery. (1)
He was not inattentive, but death struck him unawares,
overtaking him when he did not perceive it.
It was as though, when the sons of Marwān slew him,
a flurry of small birds had swarmed a falcon. (2)
May God curse a world that delivers its people to the Fire
and tears away the veil that once protected kinship. (3)
Alas for my people—where is loyalty, where is betrayal?—
for those who forced the door shut against ʿAmr!
We departed, and the gloaters left that evening
as though great slabs of rock weighed upon their necks.
ʿAmr had earlier written to ʿAbd al-Malik these verses:
Marwān’s son seeks designs that, I believe,
will drive him with me into perilous seas.
Will you break a covenant Marwān himself made firm,
reinforcing it with stern sanctions and solemn oaths?
He advanced him before me—though I preceded him—
and had I not yielded, the distress would have been severe.
The concession I granted Marwān was but a passing lapse,
intended as prudent counsel amid a grave affair.
If you carry out the pact that stands between us,
then we stand united, in the open and the wide.
But if, in injustice, you hand it to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz,
the sons of Ḥarb are more entitled to it than either of us.
