about how your familiar informed you of the coming of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
He replied, “One night, as I lay between sleep and wakefulness, he came to me, tapped me with his foot and said, ‘Rise, Suwād ibn Qārib! Listen carefully and grasp what I say—if you have any sense. A messenger from Luʾayy ibn Ghālib has now been sent, summoning people to worship Allah.’ He then recited verses similar to the ones already mentioned.”
ʿUmar went on to say, “We were once in a Quraysh neighborhood called Āl Dhurayḥ. They had slaughtered a calf and the butcher was cutting it up when we suddenly heard a voice coming from inside the calf, though we could see no one. The voice called out:
‘O House of Dhurayḥ!
A decisive matter!
A herald cries
In eloquent tongue,
Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah.’
Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—his name is ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—is unanimously regarded as abandoned, and ʿAlī ibn Manṣūr is an unknown narrator; moreover, the report is broken in transmission.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Farrāʾ also recorded it through Bishr ibn Ḥajar, the brother of Yaḥyā ibn Ḥajar, from ʿAlī ibn Manṣūr, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān with similar wording.
Ibn ʿAdī states in al-Kāmil: Walīd ibn Ḥammād in Ramla narrated to us, saying: Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, saying: Ḥakam ibn Yaʿlā al-Maḥāribī related to us, saying: Abū Muʿammar ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad related to us, saying: I heard Saʿīd ibn Jubayr say, ‘Suwād ibn Qārib told me: “I was asleep on one of the mountains of al-Sharāt when someone came, struck me with his foot and said, ‘Rise, Suwād! A messenger from Luʾayy ibn Ghālib has appeared.’”’
In that version Saʿīd says, ‘Suwād told me,’ yet ʿAbbād is unreliable and prone to outrageous fabrications.
Maʿmar also narrated from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, that the very first report heard in Medina was that a woman of Yathrib named Faṭīmah had a jinn-companion
