ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār reported: ʿAṭāʾ, the freedman of al-Sāʾib, said:
“From the crown to the front of al-Sāʾib’s head his hair was jet-black, while the rest of his head—the back, the temples, and his beard—was white.
I said to him, ‘I have never seen hair more remarkable than yours!’
He replied, ‘Do you know, my boy, why that is? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me while I was playing, ran his hand over my head, and said, “May Allah bless you.” The spot he touched will never turn grey.’ (2)
That is, the exact place covered by his palm.
Yūnus narrated from al-Zuhrī who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never appointed an official judge, nor did Abū Bakr or ʿUmar, until ʿUmar said to al-Sāʾib, the nephew of Namir, “Would you not relieve me of some of this burden?” Things remained so until the caliphate of ʿUthmān. (3)’
ʿAbd al-Aʿlā al-Farwī said: ‘I saw al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd wearing a mantle of khazz (fine brocade), a robe of khazz, and a turban of khazz.’ (4)
It is related from al-Juʿayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān that al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd died in the year 94 AH.
Al-Wāqidī, Abū Mushir, and others said that he passed away in 91 AH.
