Ibn Yūnus said: He passed away in 62 AH, during the month of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, in Alexandria.
74 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sarjis al-Muzanī * (M, 4)
A Companion, extraordinarily long-lived, who took up residence in Basra and was an ally of Banū Makhzūm. It is authentically established that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Allah to forgive him (1).
He also narrated from ʿUmar.
Among those who transmitted from him are: ʿUthmān ibn Ḥakīm, Qatādah ibn Diʿāmah, and ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal. I am of the opinion that Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī met him as well.
Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: “There is no disagreement about including him among the Companions according to their established criterion of actual audition and meeting.”
As for ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal’s remark, “Indeed, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sarjis saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ but did not have companionship with him,” what he intended was the special type of prolonged association advocated by Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab and others—and Allah knows best.

(1) Related by Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 2346) with the isnād: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād – ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sarjis, who said: “I saw the Prophet, peace be upon him, and ate bread and meat with him—or he said: *tharīd* (bread soaked in broth). I then asked him: ‘Will the Prophet seek forgiveness for you?’ He replied: ‘Yes, and for you as well,’ and he recited: ‘Seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women’ (Q 47:19). I then walked behind him and saw the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders, near the upper part of his left shoulder-blade, a raised cluster of moles resembling small warts.”
The same report appears in the Musnad (5/82) and in Ibn Saʿd, 7/58.
