Sahl related a number of hadiths. Those who narrated from him include his son ʿAbbās, Abū Ḥāzim al-Aʿraj, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Dhubāb, Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, Yaḥyā ibn Maymūn al-Ḥaḍramī, and others.
He was the last of the Companions to die in Madinah, and he was a centenarian.
ʿAbd al-Muhaymin ibn ʿAbbās ibn Sahl—reporting from his father, from his grandfather—said: “Sahl ibn Saʿd’s name was Ḥazn, but the Prophet (1) ﷺ changed it.”
ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said, “Sahl ibn Saʿd married 15 women.”
It is related that he once attended a wedding banquet at which 9 of his divorced wives were present. When he left, they stood and said, “How are you, Abū al-ʿAbbās?”
I say: Some transmitters drop the second “Saʿd” from his lineage, and some gave him the kunya Abū Yaḥyā.
Many authorities recorded his death in 91 AH, while Abū Nuʿaym and his student al-Bukhārī said it was in 88 AH.
I read this isnād to Yaḥyā ibn Aḥmad at al-Thaghr and to Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Qurashī in Egypt; both of you were informed by Muḥammad ibn ʿImād, who told us ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rifāʿah, who told us ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan the judge, who told us ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar al-Mālikī, who told us Abū al-Ṭāhir Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Madīnī, who narrated to us Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, who narrated to us Sufyān, from al-Zuhrī, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, who heard him say:
“A man once looked through a hole into the Prophet’s ﷺ room while the Prophet ﷺ was holding a small rake with which he was scratching his head. He said, ‘Had I known you were watching me, I would have driven it into your eye. Asking permission was only prescribed to prevent such staring.’” Agreed upon. (1)
