69 – ʿUtbah ibn al-Nuddar al-Sulamī, the Syrian * (Q)
A Companion from Syria, distinct from the preceding bearer of the name.
He has two hadiths.⦗1⦘
Those who transmitted from him include Khālid ibn Maʿdān and ʿUlayy ibn Rabāḥ.
He is counted among the Companions by al-Baghawī, al-Ṭabarānī, and others.
His reports are preserved only through the chain of Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
Ibn Saʿd said: He lived in Damascus.
Khalīfah said: He died in the year 84 AH.

(1) Ibn Majah (no. 2444) records, through the chain Muhammad b. al-Mustafa al-Himsi → Baqiyya b. al-Walid → Maslama b. ʿAli → Saʿid b. Abi Ayyub → al-Harith b. Yazid → ʿAli b. Rabah, who said: I heard ʿUtbah b. al-Nadr say, “We were with the Messenger of Allah when he recited ‘Ta Sin Mim’ (surah al-Qasas). Upon reaching the story of Musa he said: ‘Musa, upon him be peace, hired himself out for eight—or ten—years, in return for guarding his chastity and for food to eat.’” The isnad is weak because Baqiyyah practised tadlis. Except for this narration, nothing from ʿUtbah appears in the six canonical collections.

وَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ، وَجَمَاعَةٌ: تُوُفِّيَ سَنَةَ سَبْعٍ وَثَمَانِيْنَ.

الصَّحَابِيُّ، الشَّامِيُّ، فَآخَرُ.

يَرْوِي عَنْهُ: خَالِدُ بنُ مَعْدَانَ، وَعُلَيُّ بنُ رَبَاحٍ.
ذَكَرَهُ فِي الصَّحَابَةِ: البَغَوِيُّ، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ، وَجَمَاعَةٌ.
لَمْ يَجِئْ حَدِيْثُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ طَرِيقِ سُوَيْدِ بنِ عَبْدِ العَزِيْزِ.
قَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: كَانَ يَنْزِلُ دِمَشْقَ.
وَقَالَ خَلِيْفَةُ: تُوُفِّيَ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ وَثَمَانِيْنَ.

(١) أخرج ابن ماجه (٢٤٤٤) من طريق محمد بن المصطفى الحمصي، حدثنا بقية بن الوليد، عن مسلمة بن علي، عن سعيد بن أبي أيوب، عن الحارث بن يزيد، عن علي بن رباح قال: سمعت عتبة بن الندر يقول: كنا عند رسول الله ﷺ، فقرأ (طسم) حتى إذا بلغ قصة موسى قال: " إن موسى ﷺ آجر نفسه ثماني سنين أو عشرا، على عفة فرجه وطعام بطنه ".
وإسناده ضعيف لتدليس بقية، وليس لعتبة هذا في الكتب الستة، سوى هذا الحديث.
