the commander, Abū Wahb al-Umawī. His period of companionship was brief and his narrations are few. He was the maternal half-brother of the Commander of the Believers ʿUthmān, and one of those who embraced Islam at the Conquest. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to collect the alms from Banū al-Muṣṭaliq (1), and he ordered that his father be put to the sword while captive on the day of—

(1) Imam Ahmad relates in his Musnad (4:279) and al-Tabarani (no. 3395) through several chains from Muhammad ibn Sabiq, from Isa ibn Dinar, from his father, who said: I heard al-Harith ibn Dirar al-Khuza‘i say, “I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; he invited me to Islam and I accepted. He then asked me for the zakat, and I agreed. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, let me return to my people and call them to Islam and to paying zakat. Those who respond, I will collect their zakat; then at the appointed time you may send a messenger to take what I have gathered.’ When I had collected the zakat and the time fixed by the Prophet arrived, no envoy came. I feared that Allah and His Messenger were displeased, so I summoned the notables of my tribe and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah never breaks a promise; the delay of his envoy can only mean anger. Let us therefore go to him.’ “Meanwhile the Prophet had dispatched al-Walid ibn Uqbah to take the zakat. On the way al-Walid became frightened, turned back, and reported: ‘O Messenger of Allah, al-Harith withheld the zakat and tried to kill me.’ The Prophet therefore sent a detachment against al-Harith. As we approached Madina we met the detachment that had already set out. They said, ‘This is al-Harith.’ When I reached them I asked, ‘Against whom have you been sent?’ They replied, ‘Against you.’ I asked, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘The Messenger of Allah sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to you, and he claims you withheld the zakat and attempted to kill him.’ I said, ‘No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I never even saw him! I set out only because the Messenger’s envoy was delayed and I feared divine displeasure.’ “When I entered upon the Messenger of Allah he asked, ‘Did you withhold the zakat and try to kill my envoy?’ I replied, ‘No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I never saw him. I only came because your messenger was late and I feared that Allah and His Messenger might be angry with us.’ Then the verse of Surat al-Hujurat was revealed: ‘O you who believe, if a wicked man brings you news, verify it, lest you harm a people through ignorance and afterwards regret what you have done’ (Quran 49:6).”
