by marrying him to his uncle’s daughter, Ummāmah, the daughter of Ḥamzah whose guardianship was disputed by ʿAlī, Jaʿfar, and Zayd ibn Ḥārithah. (1)

Ibn Saʿd remarks: “We do not know of him preserving anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He died in Madinah during the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik, and he was older than his brother ʿUmar. Such is the report of Ibn Saʿd.

The commander, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qurashī al-ʿĀmirī, Companion, long-time resident of Damascus.

From the Prophet ﷺ he transmits the hadith: “Hands are not to be cut off during a military expedition,” (2) and the hadith:

(1) Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar cites the report in al-Isabah, 2/66, from Ibn Ishaq: “Someone I trust told me, on the authority of Abd Allah b. Shaddad….” The narrative about the dispute between Ali, Jaʿfar and Zayd b. Harithah over the guardianship (kafala) of Umamah is recorded by al-Bukhari, 7/385, 390, Book of Hajj: “How many ʿumrahs did the Prophet perform?” and “Wearing weapons while in ihram,” as well as in the Book of Reconciliation: “How to write, ‘This is what so-and-so son of so-and-so has agreed upon.’” Abu Dawud also transmits it, no. 2278. * Further references: Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat, 7/409; al-Zubayr b.
