As for his death, the reports differ. Maʿmar related from Ḥumayd that he died in 91 AH, and the same date was given by Qatādah, al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī, Saʿīd ibn ʿUfair, and Abū ʿUbayd.
Maʿn ibn ʿĪsā narrated—on the authority of one of Anas’s sons—that his death occurred in 92 AH, a view also held by al-Wāqidī.
Several scholars—whose opinion is the soundest—said that he died in 93 AH. This was stated by Ibn ʿUlayyah, Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir (1), al-Madāʾinī, Abū Nuʿaym, Khalīfah, al-Fallās, and Qaʿnab. On this reckoning his age would have been 103 years.
Al-Anṣārī said, “We disputed Anas’s age. Some maintained that he reached 103 years, while others said 107.”
His Musnad comprises 2,286 hadiths. Of these, al-Bukhārī and Muslim agree upon 180; al-Bukhārī alone records 80, and Muslim alone 90.
