Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ transmitted—through an unnamed intermediary—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Sāʾib, who said:
“I assumed the kunyah of my grandfather Abū al-Sāʾib. He had been the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ associate in trade during the pre-Islamic era. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘What an excellent associate he was; he neither bargained nor argued.’ (1)
Ibn ʿUyaynah related—from Dāwūd ibn Shābūr, from Mujāhid—who said:
“We used to boast before the people of our reciter ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Sāʾib (2), our jurist ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, our muʾadhdhin Abū Mahdhūrah, and our judge ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr (3).”
It was said that Ibn al-Sāʾib died during the rule of Ibn al-Zubayr. Ibn Abī Mulaykah said, “I saw Ibn ʿAbbās standing at the grave of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Sāʾib, supplicating for him.” (4)
60 – al-Miswar ibn Makhramah ibn Nawfal ibn Uhāyib al-Zuhrī * (ʿ)
A descendant of ʿAbd Manāf ibn Zuhrah ibn Quṣayy ibn Kilāb, the eminent imām.
(1) Its chain of transmission is weak because the transmitter who narrates from Abd Allah ibn al-Saib is unknown. The hadith was cited a few lines above; there it states that the Prophet’s business partner was al-Saib Abu Abd Allah, not his grandfather.
(2) In the printed edition the name is mistakenly given as “Ubayd.”
(3) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat, 5/445, through the isnad of al-Fadl ibn Dukayn; the chain is sound.
(4) Ibn Saʿd, 5/455, through the route of Abd Allah ibn Numayr — Abd al-Malik ibn Jurayj — Ibn Abi Mulayka.
