Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

His father had been the Prophet’s associate in trade before the advent of revelation (1). ʿAbd Allāh studied the Qur’an under Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, from whom he also transmitted hadith, as he likewise did from ʿUmar. Mujāhid recited the Qur’an before him for approval, and it is also said that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kathīr read to him—Allah knows best. Among those who narrated from him were Ibn Abī Mulaykah, ʿAṭāʾ, his grandson Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Jaʿfar, his son Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Makhzūmī, and others. He prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca, during which the Prophet recited Sūrah al-Muʾminūn (2). Muslim and other authorities state that he was indeed a Companion.

(1) Ahmad, al-Musnad, 3:425, through the chain of ʿAffan – Wahib – ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUthman b. Khuthaym – Mujahid – al-Saʾib b. Abi al-Saʾib: before Islam he was the Prophet’s ﷺ partner in commerce. On the day of the Conquest he came to the Prophet, who said, “Welcome to my brother and my partner; he neither deferred to wrongdoing nor entered into dispute.” The same narration appears in Abu Dawud, Sunan, no. 4836 (Book of Manners, chapter: Disapproval of praising someone to his face) and in Ibn Majah, Sunan, no. 2287, through two isnads from Sufyan – Ibrahim b. Abi al-Muhajir – Mujahid – Qaʾid al-Saʾib – al-Saʾib: “I came to the Prophet ﷺ and people began praising me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I know him better than you do.’ I replied, ‘You are right, may my father and mother be your ransom. You were my partner, and what an excellent partner you were: you neither compromised (la tudari) nor argued (la tumari).’ La tudari: you did not accommodate or oppose unjustly; la tumari: you did not quarrel. (2) Muslim, Sahih, no. 455 (Book of Prayer, chapter: Recitation in the Dawn Prayer); Ahmad, Musnad, 3:411; al-Nasaʾi, Sunan, 2:176 (Book of the Opening Takbir, chapter: Reciting part of a surah); Abu Dawud, Sunan, no. 649 (Book of Prayer, chapter: Praying in sandals); and Ibn Majah, Sunan, no. 820 (Book of the Establishment of Prayer, chapter: Recitation in the Fajr Prayer) all transmit that ʿAbd Allah b. al-Saʾib said: “The Prophet ﷺ led us in the dawn prayer in Mecca. He began Surah al-Muʾminun (The Believers), and when he reached the passage about Musa and Harun—or the passage about ʿIsa—a cough overtook the Prophet ﷺ, so he bowed; I, ʿAbd Allah b. al-Saʾib, witnessed this.”
