Hishām ibn ʿAmmār said: Maʿrūf al-Khayyāṭ narrated to us, saying, “I saw Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ dictating hadiths to them.”
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh transmitted—on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Khālid—that “Wāthilah passed away in 83 AH (1), at the age of one hundred and five.”
Al-Bukhārī and others relied upon him.
Abū Mushir, along with several scholars, said: “He died in 85 AH, when he was ninety-eight years old.”
Qatādah remarked, “The last Companion to die in Damascus was Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ.”
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim said: Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and others informed us that Wāthilah said, “I stationed myself, under cover of darkness, on the Qayniyah Bridge (2) so that my position would be concealed from those coming out of Bāb al-Jābiyah (3).”
Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allah reports from Wāthilah that he said: “I could hear the creaking of Bāb al-Jābiyah, so I remained where I was. Then a large cavalry force appeared. I let them pass a little, then charged at them, shouting the takbīr. They imagined they had been surrounded, fled back into the city, and their commander surrendered—so I trampled him.”
