Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid reported: Zayd ibn Wāqid narrated to us, from Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allah, from Wāthilah, who said:
“We were the Companions of the Veranda; not one of us possessed a complete garment, and the sweat had cut pathways through the dust on our skin. While we were in that state, the Prophet ﷺ approached and said, ‘Let the poor among the Emigrants receive glad tidings (1).’ ”
Al-Awzāʿī said: Abū ʿAmmār—one of our own people—narrated to us; Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ narrated to me:
“The Prophet ﷺ took al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, and Fāṭimah, wrapped them in his cloak, and declared, ‘Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you completely’ (Al-Aḥzāb 33). Then he said, ‘O Allah, these are my family.’ ”
Wāthilah said, “So I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, am I also part of your family?’ He replied, ‘You are part of my family.’ He continued, ‘That is among the dearest of all my hopes (2).’ ”
This is a fair, singular hadith.
Makḥūl narrated from Wāthilah that he said, “When I relate a hadith to you conveying its intended meaning, that should suffice you (3).”

(2) Also cited by al-Tabari in his Tafsir, 22 / 7, through the chain: ʿAbd al-Karim ibn Abi ʿUmayr – related to us al-Walid ibn Muslim – Abu ʿAmr al-Awzaʿi – Shaddad Abu ʿAmmar, who said: “I heard Wathila ibn al-Asqaʿ ….” About ʿAbd al-Karim ibn Abi ʿUmayr, the author of al-Mizan remarks, “He is unknown,” while the rest of the transmitters are trustworthy. Ahmad, 4 / 107, records it without the words “Wathila said …,” through Muhammad ibn Musʿab, from al-Awzaʿi with this same isnad. Al-Tabari, 22 / 6, also records it through ʿAbd al-Aʿla ibn Wasel – al-Fadl ibn Dukayn – ʿAbd al-Salam ibn Harb – Kulthum al-Muharibi – Abu ʿAmmar – Wathila …; this isnad is hasan (sound).
Kulthum al-Muharibi is Ibn Ziyad; Ibn Abi Hatim, 7 / 164, gives his biography without any criticism or praise, and several narrators transmit from him. The remaining transmitters are trustworthy.
