Yalīl ibn Nāshib al-Laythī was one of the Companions who lived in the Veranda (al-Suffah).
He embraced Islam in the ninth year after the Hijrah and was present at the expedition of Tabūk. He belonged to the poor among the Muslims—may Allah be pleased with him—and lived to an advanced age.
There is disagreement about his kunyah: some call him Abū al-Khaṭṭāb, others Abū al-Asqaʿ, still others Abū Qirṣāfah, and yet others Abū Shaddād.
He transmitted a number of hadiths. Those who reported from him include: Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, Shaddād Abū ʿAmmār, Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Naṣrī, Makḥūl, Yūnus ibn Maysarah ibn Ḥalbas, Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah, Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd al-Qaṣīr, Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḥārith al-Dhimmārī, and many others. The last of them was his freedman, Maʿrūf the tailor, who lived on until 180 AH.
He also related from Abū Marthad al-Ghanawī and Abū Hurayrah.
He had a well-known mosque in Damascus (1), stayed for a time in the village of al-Balāṭ (2), and owned a house near the residence of Ibn al-Baqqāl in the alley of … (3).

(1) Yusūf b. ʿAbd al-Hādī states in Thimar al-Maqāṣid, p. 63: “There is a mosque next to the house of Ibn Rīsh, on the qibla side of al-Zallaqa at the lower level; it has an imam and an endowment, and it is said to be the mosque of Wāthila b. al-Asqaʿ.” He continues on p. 64: “The Mosque of Wāthila stands at the head of Darb al-Zallaqa, near the bakers; it is a large, ground-floor building with an imam, a muezzin and its own endowment. At its entrance runs a water channel in the small market of Bāb al-Ṣaghīr; Bāb al-Ṣaghīr is the same as Bāb al-Shāghūr, according to Badrān.”
(2) [This village] lies in the eastern Ghūṭa of Damascus, west of Zabdīn.
(3) Above the word “bi-Darb” the manuscript notes: “thus found.” The same wording appears in Al-Istiʿab, 3/644, and in Usud al-Ghābah.
