Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and among them:

  1. al-Mundhir ibn al-Zubayr al-Asadī, Abū ʿUthmān—an emir and one of the renowned champions.
He was born during the caliphate of ʿUmar.

He took part in the expedition against Constantinople with Yazīd and later paid him a formal visit.

Al-Zubayr relates: Musʿab ibn ʿUthmān told me that al-Mundhir fell out with his brother ʿAbd Allah, so he moved to Kūfa. From there he went to Muʿāwiyah, who honoured him and granted him one million dirhams, but Muʿāwiyah died before al-Mundhir was able to collect the gift.

Muʿāwiyah had stipulated that al-Mundhir should descend into his grave. While al-Mundhir was in Kūfa he learned that his brother had risen against Yazīd, so he hurried to join him in Mecca, covering the distance in eight nights. When the Syrians besieged Ibn al-Zubayr in 64 AH, al-Mundhir—may Allah have mercy on him—was killed during those very days (1).

His daughter Fāṭimah bint al-Mundhir (2) is a transmitter whose isnād is particularly elevated; she was the wife of Hishām ibn ʿUrwah.

Al-Mundhir lived forty years.

  1. ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib al-Hāshimī, the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

His mother was ʿĀtikah bint Abī Wahb al-Makhzūmiyyah, one of the women who embraced Islam at the Conquest of Mecca.
