—may Allah not bless him—to violate the sanctity and security of Allah’s House. We seek refuge in Allah from a trial that deafens the heart.
Al-Wāqidī relates: Farwah ibn Zubayd narrated from ʿAbbās ibn Sahl:
“I heard Ibn al-Zubayr say, ‘I can see nothing for myself today except death. Last night I beheld a vision in which the sky was rent open for me and I entered it. By Allah, I have become weary of life and all it contains.’ That same morning, during the dawn prayer, he recited—letter by letter—‘Nūn. By the Pen…’ while his sword lay unsheathed at his side. (1)
Al-Wāqidī also reports: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ narrated from his father that
when Ibn ʿUmar heard the cries of takbīr between the Mosque and al-Ḥajūn at the moment Ibn al-Zubayr was killed, he remarked, ‘Those who exclaimed “Allāhu Akbar” at his birth were more numerous and better than those who exclaim it for his killing.’ (2)
Maʿmar narrated from Ayyūb, from Ibn Sīrīn:
Ibn al-Zubayr used to say, ‘Everything Kaʿb foretold us has come to pass, except his statement, “A youth from Thaqīf will kill me.” Here lies his head before me’—meaning the impostor al-Mukhtār.
Ziyād al-Jaṣṣāṣ narrated from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Mujāhid:
Ibn ʿUmar said to his servant, ‘Do not take me past Ibn al-Zubayr,’—that is, while he was crucified. But the servant became inattentive and led him by. Ibn ʿUmar lifted his head, saw him, and said: ‘May Allah have mercy on you, Abū Khubayb. I knew you only as one given to fasting, standing in night prayer, and maintaining your ties of kinship. Yet, by Allah, despite the offenses you committed, I still hope that Allah will not punish you.’
He then added, ‘Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever commits an evil deed will be requited for it in this world.”’ (3)
