ʿAbbās al-Tarqufī narrated: Muhammad ibn Kathīr told us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā, from Abū Salamah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘A man from Quraysh will desecrate Mecca; he will be called ʿAbd Allāh, and upon him will rest half the punishment of all humankind.’ By Allah, I shall never be that man!”
Consequently, he left the city and took up residence in al-Ṭāʾif.
I (the author) say: Muhammad here is al-Maṣṣīṣī; he is regarded as lenient ⦗1⦘, yet both Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī relied upon his reports.
Abū al-Naḍr reported: Isḥāq ibn Saʿīd related to us, Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr informed us, saying:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr came to ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr and warned him, ‘Beware of committing sacrilege in Allah’s sanctuary. I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “A man from Quraysh will violate it—and it will in turn be violated because of him—and if his sins were weighed against the combined sins of mankind and jinn, they would outweigh them.”’
Ibn al-Zubayr replied, ‘So take heed, Ibn ʿAmr; see that you are not that man…’ and he continued recounting the rest of the ḥadith ⦗2⦘.
Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah narrated from al-Zuhrī, who said that Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar explained the verse, ‘If two groups of believers fight each other…’ (al-Ḥujurāt 49:9). I asked my father, ‘Who are those groups?’ He answered, ‘Ibn al-Zubayr transgressed against the people of Syria.’
Yūnus also transmitted it from al-Zuhrī with the wording, ‘He transgressed against these people and broke the covenant he had made with them.’
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār said: Khālid ibn Waḍḍāḥ told me; Abū al-Khaṣīb Nāfiʿ, the freedman of the family of al-Zubayr, related to me from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, who said:
“I saw stones from the catapult soaring through the air and thought they were about to strike Ibn al-Zubayr’s very beard. I heard him declare, ‘By Allah, if I could but find three hundred men who would remain steadfast as I do, I would not care were all the people of the earth to charge against me.’” ⦗3⦘
