Al-Tabūdhakī narrated: Hunayd ibn al-Qāsim told us—I heard ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr say, “I heard my father relate:
‘He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the Prophet was having cupping done. When the cupping was finished, the Prophet said, “ʿAbd Allāh, take this blood and dispose of it where no one can see you.” After leaving the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he took the blood and drank it. When he returned, the Prophet asked, “What did you do with the blood?” He replied, “I looked for the most concealed place I knew and put it there.” The Prophet said, “You drank it, didn’t you?” He answered, “Yes.” The Prophet then said, “Why did you drink the blood? Woe to the people because of you, and woe to you from the people!” ’
Mūsā al-Tabūdhakī commented, “I reported this to Abū ʿĀṣim, and he said, ‘People used to think that the strength he possessed came from that blood.’ ”
Abū Yaʿlā recorded the report in his Musnad, and I know of no criticism leveled against Hunayd. (1)
Khalid al-Ḥaddāʾ narrated—from Yūsuf Abū Yaʿqūb, from Muḥammad ibn Ḥāṭib and al-Ḥārith—who said:
“Ibn al-Zubayr was always eager for leadership.”
I asked, “How so?”
They said, “A thief was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ordered that the man be killed. It was said, ‘He only stole.’ The Prophet replied, ‘Then cut his hand.’ Later the same man was brought during the caliphate of Abū Bakr; he had stolen again and his limbs had already been severed. Abū Bakr said, ‘I can find no ruling for you other than what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ decreed for you the day He ordered your execution.’ He therefore instructed some young lads from among the Emigrants—of whom I was one—to kill him. Ibn al-Zubayr said, ‘Make me your leader.’ So we appointed him, took the thief to al-Baqīʿ, and executed him. (2)”
