The Conversion of the Jinn
Allah, exalted is He, says:
“And when We directed a group of the jinn toward you to listen to the Quran…” (al-Ahqaf 46:29).
He also says:
“O company of jinn and humankind, did messengers not come to you from among yourselves…?” (al-Anʿam 6:130).
Moreover, an entire surah—Surah al-Jinn—was revealed about them.
Abu Bishr narrated from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ neither recited the Quran to the jinn nor saw them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once set out with a group of his Companions heading for the market of ʿUkāẓ. In those days the devils had been barred from eavesdropping on the heavens, and flaming meteors were being hurled at them. They returned to their folk, who asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’ The devils replied, ‘We have been prevented from the news of the heavens, and meteors have been hurled at us.’ Their folk said, ‘Nothing has blocked you from the news of heaven except that something momentous has occurred. Therefore search the eastern and western regions of the earth.’
“A group of them who had set out toward Tihāmah then came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Nakhlah, while he was on his way to the market of ʿUkāẓ and was leading his Companions in the dawn prayer. When they heard the Quran they listened attentively and said, ‘By Allah, this is what has barred you from the news of heaven.’ When they returned to their people they said,
‘Indeed we have heard a wondrous Quran
that guides to right guidance, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord’ (al-Jinn 72:1-2).
Thereupon the verse was revealed:
‘Say: It has been revealed to me…’ (al-Jinn 72:1).”
Agreed upon.
As for Ibn ʿAbbās’s statement that the Prophet ﷺ neither recited to the jinn nor saw them,
