your nobles and finest people, yet you turned him away?”
He continued, “They then brought me food and drink, but I said, ‘I have no need of it; Allah has already fed me and given me to drink.’ When they saw my condition, they embraced the faith. (1)
Misʿar narrated from Abū al-ʿAnbas, from Abū al-ʿAdabbas, from Abū Marzūq, from Abū Ghālib, from Abū Umāmah who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once came out to us leaning on a staff. We all rose to greet him, whereupon he said, ‘Do not rise as the non-Arabs do, each of them exalting the other.’ (2)”
Ibn al-Mubārak reported: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh related to us, Muhammad ibn Ziyād related to us:
“I saw Abū Umāmah pass by a man in the mosque who was prostrating, weeping, and supplicating. He said to him, ‘You—yes, you! If only this were in your house.’”
Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr narrated to me from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir, who said:
“We used to sit with Abū Umāmah, and he would relate many sayings of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to us. Then he would say, ‘Understand them well, and convey on our behalf what you hear.’”
(1) Sadaqa b. Hurmuz is weak, yet his report is corroborated; al-Hakim transmits it through his chain (3/641–642). Abu Ghalib—the companion of Abu Umama—is described in Ibn Hajar’s Taqrib as “trustworthy but prone to error,” which places his hadith at the level of hasan. Al-Haythami cites the narration in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid (9/387) and comments: “Al-Tabarani related it with two isnads; the first is hasan and includes Abu Ghalib, who has been declared reliable.” Ibn Hajar in al-Isaba (2/182) ascribes the hadith to Abu Yaʿla, and it is also found in al-Bayhaqi’s Dalaʾil. Ibn ʿAsakir records it as well (8/149 a).
(2) Abu al-ʿAdbas—misprinted as al-ʿAdis in some editions—is unknown, and Abu Marzuq is likewise unknown. The narration appears in Sunan Abi Dawud (no. 5230), Book of Manners, Chapter: Standing up for another person, through the chain of Abu Bakr b. Abi Shayba from Abd Allah b. Numayr …; Ibn Majah also transmits it (no. 3836), Book of Supplication, Chapter: The supplications of the Messenger of Allah, through the chain of Ali b. Muhammad → Wakiʿ → Misʿar → Abu Marzuq → Abu Waʾil → Abu Umama:
“The Messenger of Allah came out to us leaning on a staff. When we saw him, we stood up. He said: ‘Do not do as the Persians do for their dignitaries.’ We said, ‘Messenger of Allah, would you pray to Allah for us?’ He replied: ‘O Allah, forgive us, have mercy on us, be pleased with us, accept from us, admit us into Paradise, save us from the Fire, and set right all our affairs.’ We wished he would add more, whereupon he said: ‘Have I not included everything for you?’”
The hadith is likewise cited by Ibn ʿAsakir (8/149 b).
