ibn Wahb ibn ʿArīb ibn Wahb ibn Riyāḥ ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Maʿn ibn Mālik ibn Aʿṣur.
Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir said, “I heard Abū Umāmah say: ‘I heard the Prophet ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage…’”
I asked Abū Umāmah, “How old were you that day?”
He replied, “I was thirty years old then.” (1)
It is also reported that he gave the pledge beneath the tree.
Rajāʾ ibn Ḥaywah narrated from Abū Umāmah: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He grant me martyrdom.”
He answered, “O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils.”
We later went out on campaign; we were kept safe and we gained spoils.
I then said, “O Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed.”
He replied, “Hold fast to fasting, for nothing equals it.”
Consequently, Abū Umāmah, his wife, and his servant were scarcely ever found except in a state of fasting. (2)
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid and Ṣadaqah ibn Hurmuz—using the same wording—narrated through Abū Ghālib, from Abū Umāmah:
“The Prophet ﷺ sent me to the tribe of Bāhilah. I went to them, and they welcomed me. I said, ‘I have come to forbid you this food, and I am the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah, so believe in Him.’
They rejected me and drove me away. I left hungry and thirsty, lay down, and in my sleep a cup of milk was brought to me. I drank, was satisfied, and my stomach swelled.
The people then said, ‘[A man has come to you] from…’”
