Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Malik ibn Dinar, reporting from Ikrimah, said:
Ibn ʿAbbas used to wear khazz (a silk-wool brocade) and he disliked the plain, unpatterned weave (1).

ʿAtiyyah al-ʿAwfi related:
When the conflict broke out between Ibn al-Zubayr and ʿAbd al-Malik, Ibn ʿAbbas and Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah set out with their families until they reached Mecca. Ibn al-Zubayr sent word to them: “Give me your pledge of allegiance.” They refused, saying, “Your affair is your own; we will not oppose you, nor anyone else.” He persisted and swore, “By Allah, you will pledge allegiance, or I will burn you with fire!”

So they dispatched Abū al-Tufayl ʿAmir ibn Wathilah to their partisans in Kufa. Four thousand men volunteered, armed themselves, entered Mecca, and raised a single takbir that was heard by all its inhabitants. Ibn al-Zubayr fled from the mosque until he entered the Dār al-Nadwah—some said he clung to the curtains of the Kaʿbah—declaring, “I seek refuge in Allah’s House.”

The narrator continued: We then turned to Ibn ʿAbbas and Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, around whose houses wood had been piled to burn them. We escorted them out until we settled them in al-Taʾif.

When Ibn al-Zubayr barred ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas from meeting the people—he feared him—it was only the loss of Ibn ʿAbbas’s sight that kept the populace from offering him the caliphate, had he wished it. On that occasion Abū al-Tufayl al-Kinani recited:

May the nights’ bounty perish—how they make us laugh,
Then with their wondrous trials they make us weep.
What changes the days inflict upon Ibn al-Zubayr
Concerning this world distract and soothe us.
We would come to Ibn ʿAbbas, who lit in us understanding,
Won us reward, and guided us aright.
The bowls of ʿUbayd Allah are ever brimming,
Feeding the guest and the poor alike.
In their household dwell virtue, religion, and worldly good;
From it we take whatever we desire, whenever we wish.

(1) The manuscript reads al-samt (“silence”); al-khazz denotes cloth woven from wool and silk, whereas al-musmat is a fabric made wholly of silk, with no cotton or other material mixed in.
