water for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to perform his ablution, whereupon he prayed, “O Allah, grant him deep understanding of the religion and teach him the interpretation.”
Ibn ʿAbbās also said, “The Messenger of Allah prayed that I be granted wisdom twice.” (1)
Kawthar ibn Ḥakīm—who is weak—reported from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, in a narration traced back to the Prophet: “Indeed, the scholar of this ummah is Ibn ʿAbbās.” The only one who transmits it from him is Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Ruhāwī. (2)
ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khālid narrated—from Ibn Buraydah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that he said:
“I reached the Prophet ﷺ while Gabriel was with him. Gabriel said to him, ‘This boy will be the scholar of the community, so treat him well.’” (3)
This is a disclaimed (munkar) hadith, and it is transmitted solely by Saʿdān ibn Jaʿfar from ʿAbd al-Muʾmin.
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated—from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār, from Ibn ʿAbbās—who said:
“I was with my father in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and he seemed to be turning away from my father. When we left, my father said, ‘Did you not notice your cousin acting as though he were avoiding me?’ I replied, ‘Someone was with him, speaking to him privately.’ He asked, ‘Was someone with him?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ So he went back and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, was anyone with you?’ The Prophet then said to me, ‘Did you see him, ʿAbd Allāh?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘That was Gabriel; he is the one who kept me occupied from you.’”
