Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ narrated from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ stroked my head and prayed that I be granted wisdom (1).
Shabīb ibn Bishr transmitted from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the latrine and then came out. There was a covered basin there, so he asked, ‘Who put this here?’ I replied, ‘I did.’ He then supplicated, ‘O Allah, teach him the interpretation of the Qur’an’ (2).
Ibn Shihāb related from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “I approached riding a she-donkey, having nearly reached puberty, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was leading the people in prayer at Minā (3).”
= Ubayd Allah relates from Ibn Abbas—as al-Hafiz indicates in Fatḥ al-Bari and as al-Bukhari records in his Sahih, 8/192, through the chain of Abdullah b. Muhammad › Sufyan b. Uyaynah › Ubayd Allah—who said: “I heard Ibn Abbas say: My mother and I were counted among the mustadʿafun (those deemed too weak to migrate).”
Al-Bukhari also transmits it, and al-Tabari in his Tafsir (no. 10270), through two isnads from Hammad b. Zayd › Ayyub › Abdullah b. Abi Mulaykah: Ibn Abbas recited, “except the oppressed men, women and children who possess no means and cannot find a way” (Q 4:98) and added, “My mother and I are among those whom Allah has excused.” It likewise appears in Sunan al-Bayhaqi, 9/13.
(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, 1/155 (Book of Knowledge, “O Allah, teach him the Book”), 7/78 (Merits of the Companions, “Mention of Ibn Abbas”), and 13/208 (opening of Kitab al-Iʿtisam); also by al-Tirmidhi (3824), Ibn Majah (166), al-Tabarani (10588), and al-Baladhuri, Ansab al-ashraf, 3/29—all through Khalid al-Haddhaʼ › Ikrimah › Ibn Abbas: “The Prophet ﷺ pressed me to his chest and said: ‘O Allah, teach him wisdom.’” Ibn Saʿd, 2/365, narrates via Amr b. Dinar › Tawus › Ibn Abbas: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me, stroked my forelock, and said: ‘O Allah, teach him wisdom and the interpretation of the Book.’”
(2) Recorded by al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak, 3/537, who judged it sound. The author of the abridgement contests this, remarking: “Shabib is somewhat weak.”
(3) Narrated by Malik, al-Muwatta, 1/155 (Shortening the Prayer during Travel, “Concession for passing in front of someone praying”); by al-Bukhari, 1/472 (Book of the Sutrah, “The imam’s sutrah suffices for those behind him”), and again in “Description of the Prayer” (chapter on children’s ablution), in “Hajj” (chapter on a child’s pilgrimage), and in “Knowledge” (chapter on the validity of a minor’s audition); by Muslim (504) in “Prayer,” chapter on the sutrah; and by Ahmad, 1/264: Ibn Abbas said, “I came riding a she-donkey, having nearly reached puberty, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …”
