Ibn Mahdī said: Ikrimah ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us, from Iyās ibn Salamah, from his father, who said:
“We launched a night raid against the tribe of Hawāzin together with Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, and that night I personally killed, with my own hand, seven men from among the dwellers of their tents. (1)”
Ikrimah ibn ʿAmmār said: Iyās narrated to us, from his father, who said:
“I set out with Rabāḥ, the Prophet’s servant, driving some of the Messenger of Allah’s riding animals, and I was leading a horse that belonged to Ṭalḥah. (2) ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUyaynah then raided the camels, killed their herdsman, and he and a group of men with him on horseback drove the camels away. I said,
‘O Rabāḥ! Mount this horse, take it back to Ṭalḥah, and inform the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.’
I climbed a small hill and cried out three times, ‘O for help at dawn!’ Then I pursued the raiders, shooting arrows at them and hamstringing their mounts, and the place was thick with trees. Whenever a horseman turned back toward me, I would crouch at the foot of a tree and shoot him. As I kept shooting I chanted:
‘I am the son of al-Akwāʿ … today even the sucklings shall drink!’
I struck one man between his shoulders, and whenever the passes grew narrow I would scale the mountain and hurl stones at them. I went on in that fashion until not a single one of the Prophet’s mounts remained ahead of me without my having retrieved it and driven it behind me to safety.
I continued to bombard them until they discarded more than thirty spears and more than thirty cloaks to lighten their load. They would throw nothing away without my marking it with stones, and I gathered everything and placed it on the road of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. When the forenoon had stretched on, ʿUyaynah ibn Badr arrived as reinforcement for them while they were confined in a narrow mountain pass, and I climbed the mountain.
ʿUyaynah said, ‘What is this?’
They replied, ‘We have been worn out by this relentless man—he has been upon us since before dawn.’”
