to Muslim ibn ʿUqbah, attaching pledges of safe-conduct for me. When Muslim had completed the fighting he summoned me; I went to him, and he flung the letter toward me. It contained the words:
“Treat ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn well. If he has joined them in their undertaking, grant him security and pardon him; but if he has not been with them, then he has acted rightly and commendably.”
Al-Ḥusayn’s children were: ʿAlī al-Akbar, who was killed alongside his father; ʿAlī Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, from whose line many descendants issued; Jaʿfar; and ʿAbd Allah—the last two left no offspring.
The sons born to Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn were: al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, both of whom died in childhood; Muḥammad al-Bāqir; ʿAbd Allah; Zayd; ʿUmar; ʿAlī; Muḥammad al-Awsaṭ, who left no progeny; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; al-Ḥusayn al-Ṣaghīr; and al-Qāsim, who also left no progeny.

(1) Al-Hakim records this report in al-Mustadrak, 3:204-205, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan, 4:15, through the route of Ibn Ishaq: “Yahya ibn ʿAbbad ibn ʿAbd Allah related to me, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, when Hanzalah ibn Abi ʿAmir was killed: ‘Your companion is being washed by the angels.’ They questioned his wife, who replied: ‘He rushed out when he heard the alarm call while he was in a state of major ritual impurity.’ The Prophet ﷺ then said: ‘That is why the angels washed him.’” The chain is sound; al-Hakim declared it authentic and al-Dhahabi agreed. It is further supported by a report from Ibn ʿAbbas transmitted by al-Tabarani with a hasan isnad, as noted by al-Haythami in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 3:23.
