were once a gain to us, but have turned into sheer calamity—
how immense and formidable those disasters have become!
May Allah never banish the dwellings nor the people who lived there,
even though, to my grief, they now lie forsaken.
Do you not see that the very earth has fallen sick
at the loss of Ḥusayn, and that the land itself has shuddered?
His line, “has bowed the necks,” means: after him they will feel no restraint about killing another Qurayshī.
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah related: My father told me, from his father, who said:
“My father, Ḥamzah ibn Yazīd al-Ḥaḍramī, informed me:
‘I once met a woman of remarkable beauty and intelligence called Rayyā, the wet-nurse of Yazīd—people say she reached one hundred years of age. She said:
“A man entered upon Yazīd and said, ‘Rejoice, for Allah has delivered Ḥusayn into your hands.’ Ḥusayn’s head was then brought in and set in a basin. Yazīd ordered a servant to uncover it; when he saw it he covered his own face, as though an odor had reached him from it.
“I asked her, ‘Did he strike its front teeth with a staff?’
“She replied, ‘Yes, by Allah.’ ”
Ḥamzah added: Some of our relatives also told me that they saw Ḥusayn’s head displayed on a lance in Damascus for three days.
Rayyā further told me that the head remained in the armoury until Sulaymān assumed power. He sent for it, and it was brought—reduced by then to a white bone. He placed it in a casket, perfumed it, wrapped it in a shroud, and buried it in the Muslim cemetery.
When the Abbasid Black-Clad forces entered, they asked about the location of the head. They dug it up and took it away—Allah knows best what was done with it thereafter.
He recounted the rest of the story, and its chain of transmission is strong.
Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr narrated: al-Layth told me:
“Ḥusayn refused to surrender and was killed at al-Taff. They then brought his children—ʿAlī, Fāṭimah, and Sukhaynah—to Yazīd. Yazīd placed Sukhaynah behind his throne so that she would not see her father’s head, while ʿAlī was in iron shackles; then he struck upon the two front teeth…”
