of ʿUmar ibn Saʿd, eighty-eight men were killed.

He said: None of Husayn’s household escaped except his son ʿAli al-Asghar—the Husaynid line descends from him—for he was ill.

There were also Ḥasan son of Ḥasan son of ʿAli, who left descendants; his brother ʿAmr, who left none; al-Qāsim son of ʿAbd Allah son of Jaʿfar; and Muḥammad son of ʿAqil. They were brought along with Zaynab and Fāṭimah, the daughters of ʿAli; Fāṭimah and Sukaynah, the daughters of Husayn; his wife al-Rabab al-Kalbiyyah, mother of Sukaynah; Umm Muḥammad, daughter of Ḥasan son of ʿAli; and their male and female servants.

Husayn’s possessions were seized. A man took the jewelry of Fāṭimah, daughter of Husayn, and began to weep. She asked, “Why do you weep?”

He replied, “Shall I plunder the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and not weep?”

She said, “Then leave it.”

He said, “I fear someone else will take it.”

ʿUmar ibn Saʿd then declared, “No man has ever returned to his family with a worse burden than the one I carry. I obeyed Ibn Ziyād, disobeyed Allah, and severed the bonds of kinship.”

The courier reached Yazīd; when he informed him, Yazīd’s eyes filled with tears and he said, “Your obedience would have satisfied me without the killing of Husayn.”

Sukaynah said, “O Yazīd, are the daughters of the Messenger of Allah to be paraded as captives?”

He replied, “O daughter of my brother! By Allah, this weighs on me more than on you. I swear, had there been any kinship between Ibn Ziyād and Husayn, he would never have dared such a deed; but Sumayyah has sundered what lay between them. May Allah have mercy on Husayn! Ibn Ziyād hastened against him. By Allah, had I been with him and found no way to ward off death from him except by giving up part of my own life-span, I would gladly have done so, and I would have wished that he had been brought to me unharmed.”

Then he turned to ʿAli son of Husayn and said, “Your father severed my kinship ties and disputed my authority.”

A man stood up and said, “Their captivity is lawful booty for us.”

ʿAli replied, “You lie—unless you abandon our religion.”
