—the very ground on which he will be killed.”
He replied, “Yes.”
So the Angel brought him a handful of fine soil—or some red earth (1).
Thābit said, “We used to say that it was from Karbalā’.”
ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid reported: My father narrated to us; Abū Ghālib (2) narrated to us, from Abū Umāmah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his wives, “Do not weep over this one,” meaning al-Ḥusayn.
It was Umm Salamah’s day. Gabriel descended, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Umm Salamah, “Do not allow anyone to enter.”
Al-Ḥusayn arrived, crying, so she let him in. He came in and sat upon the Messenger of Allah’s lap.
Gabriel said, “Your community will kill him.”
He asked, “Will they kill him while they are believers?”
He answered, “Yes,” and he showed him the soil connected with him.
Its chain is fair (ḥasan).
Khālid ibn Makhlad related to us—Mūsā ibn Yaʿqūb, from Hāshim ibn Hāshim, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb ibn Zamʿah, from Umm Salamah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down one day, then awoke looking distressed; he lay down again, awoke distressed, then lay down once more. Finally he awoke with red soil in his hand, turning it over (3).
I asked, “What is this?”
He said, “Gabriel has informed me that this one—al-Ḥusayn—will be killed in the land of Iraq, and this is its soil.” (4)
