Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Hammad ibn Zayd said: Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Ansari narrated to us, from ʿUbayd ibn Hunayn (1), on the authority of al-Husayn, who related:

“I mounted the pulpit where ʿUmar was sitting and said, ‘Step down from my father’s pulpit and go to your father’s pulpit.’ He replied, ‘My father never had a pulpit!’ He then seated me beside him, and when he descended he asked, ‘My dear son, who taught you that?’ I answered, ‘No one taught it to me.’ He said, ‘My son, was it not Allah—and then you and your family—who caused the hair on our heads to grow?’ Placing his hand on his own head, he added, ‘My son, if only you would come and visit us more often.’ (2)

Its chain of transmission is sound.

Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad narrated from his father that ʿUmar allotted to al-Husayn the same stipend he had fixed for ʿAli—five thousand.

Hammad ibn Zayd narrated from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, that ʿUmar provided clothing for the sons of the Companions, but none of the garments suited al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He therefore sent to Yemen, and suitable garments were brought for them; he then said, “Now my heart is content.”

Al-Waqidi reported: Musa ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Taymi told me, from his father, that ʿUmar attached al-Hasan and al-Husayn to the stipend of their father because of their close kinship to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, granting each of them five thousand. (3)

Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated from al-ʿAyzar ibn Hurayth, who said: While ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs was sitting in the shade of the Kaʿbah, he saw al-Husayn and remarked, “Today he is the most beloved person on earth to the inhabitants of heaven.”
