48 – al-Ḥusayn the Martyr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Imām, the noble and consummate one, grandson of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his fragrant basil in this world and the apple of his eye.
Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn was the son of the Commander of the Believers, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy, the Qurashī, the Hāshimī.
He transmitted hadith from his grandfather, his father and mother, his in-law ʿUmar, and a number of others.
Narrators from him include his two children, ʿAlī and Fāṭimah; ʿUbayd ibn Ḥunayn; Hammām al-Farazdaq; ʿIkrimah; al-Shaʿbī; Ṭalḥah al-ʿUqaylī; his nephew Zayd ibn al-Ḥasan; his grandson Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Bāqir—although he never met him—his daughter Sukaynah, and others.
Al-Zubayr said: “He was born on the fifth of Shaʿbān in the year four AH.”
Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq said: “Between Ḥasan and Ḥusayn during gestation there was only one ṭuhr (interval of purity).”
In the biography of al-Ḥasan we have already cited several hadiths that pertain to al-Ḥusayn.
Hāniʾ ibn Hāniʾ reported from ʿAlī, who said, “From the chest to the feet, al-Ḥusayn most resembled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”⦗1⦘
