Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

angrily.

He said, “Turn to your prayer and do not become angry, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘That is Satan’s share (1).’ ”

Meaning: the place where Satan takes his seat.

Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl—through Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father—reported that al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn used to wear their rings on the left hand (2).

Al-Thawrī—through ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ, from Qays, the client of Khabbāb—said: “I saw al-Ḥasan dyeing his hair with black (3).”

Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr narrated to us: Yamān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to us; Muslim ibn Abī Maryam told me: “I saw al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī applying black dye (4).”

Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Sammān—through ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd—said: “I saw al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī with his hair dyed black (5).”

(1) Related by Abd al-Razzaq (no. 2991); the same route is found in Abu Dawud (no. 646) and al-Tirmidhi (no. 384). The chain is strong, for Ibn Jurayj clearly stated “I heard” in Abu Dawud’s version. Concerning the phrase “kifl al-shaytan,” al-Khattabi explains that kifl originally means folding a cloak over a camel’s hump to sit on it. The hadith likens the hair gathered at the nape to such a seat, as though the devil mounts it. The Prophet therefore ordered him to let his hair fall forward so that it reaches the place of prostration, thus frustrating the devil. (2) Reported by al-Tirmidhi in the Sunan (no. 1743) and in the Shamaʾil (no. 96). Its transmitters are reliable, yet the chain is broken because Muhammad b. Ali b. al-Husayn did not hear from his grandfather. A sound narration from Anas b. Malik states: “The Prophet’s ring was on this finger,” and he pointed to the little finger of his left hand; Muslim, Sahih (no. 2095). (3) Qays, the freedman of Khabbab, is listed by al-Bukhari in his Tarikh 7/151, where he quotes this very report without judging his reliability; the remaining narrators are trustworthy. See also al-Tabarani, nos. 2532–2535, and Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid 5/163. (4) Hajjaj b. Nasir is weak, and so is his shaykh. (5) Abu Rabiʿ al-Sammān—whose given name is Ashʿath—is matruk (wholly unreliable).
