Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq narrated—from his father—who said:
“Fāṭimah weighed the hair of Ḥasan, Ḥusayn, and Umm Kulthūm, then gave away in charity silver equal to its weight.” (1)

Abū ʿĀṣim related to us—from ʿUmar ibn Saʿīd, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿUqbah ibn al-Ḥārith—who said:
“Abū Bakr led us in the ʿAṣr prayer; afterward he and ʿAlī were walking together. He saw Ḥasan playing with some boys, so Abū Bakr picked him up, set him on his neck, and said:

‘By my father, he is the very likeness of the Prophet—
he is nothing like ʿAlī.’ (2)

ʿAlī was smiling.”

ʿAlī ibn ʿĀbis narrated—he said: Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād told us, from al-Bahī—who said:
“Ibn al-Zubayr came to us and said, ‘I saw Ḥasan approach the Prophet ﷺ while he was prostrating and climb onto his back; and I saw him come while the Prophet was bowing, whereupon he spread his legs for him until the child emerged from the other side.’” (3)

Al-Zuhrī reported that Anas said: “Of all of them, the one who most resembled the Prophet ﷺ was Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī.” (4)

Isrāʾīl narrated—from Abū Isḥāq, from Hāniʾ, from ʿAlī—who said: “Ḥasan …”

(1) All the transmitters are trustworthy, yet the isnad is mursal; see Fath al-Bari 9/515, where Ibn Hajar attributes it to Saʿid ibn Mansur. (2) In the base manuscript the word shabih appears in the nominative; the same reading is found in al-Bukhari, 7/75 (Book of the Virtues of the Companions, chapter on the merits of al-Hasan and al-Husayn). The preferable parsing, however, is the accusative. Ibn Malik justified the nominative version by treating laysa as a coordinating particle—a view held by the Kufan school—and suggested that shabih could be the subject of laysa, its predicate being an implicit pronoun omitted for brevity. A comparable usage occurs in the Pilgrimage Sermon: “alaysa dhu al-Hijjah.” The report is also recorded by al-Tabarani (no. 2527) and al-Hakim 3/168. (3) The chain is weak because of ʿAli ibn ʿAbis and his shaykh. Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid 9/175 and likewise criticises it on account of ʿAli ibn ʿAbis. (4) Related by ʿAbd al-Razzaq (no. 20984), al-Tirmidhi (no. 3778), and al-Tabarani (no. 2543) through the route of Muʿammar, from al-Zuhri, from Anas. The isnad is sound, and al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih.
