Ibn Saʿd reports: ʿUbayd Allah related to us; Israʾil related to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Buraid ibn Abi Maryam, from Abu al-Hawraʾ, from al-Hasan, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me words to recite in the qunūt: ‘O Allah, guide me among those You have guided…’ (1).”
Israʾil transmits from Abu Ishaq, from Hāniʾ, from ʿAli, who said:
“When Hasan was born, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said, ‘Show me my son; what have you named him?’ I replied, ‘Harb (war).’ He said, ‘No. He is Hasan…,’ and he mentioned the rest of the report (2).”
Yaḥyā ibn ʿĪsā al-Tamīmī narrated to us: al-Aʿmash, from Sālim ibn Abi al-Jaʿd, who said that ʿAli declared:
“I was a man fond of war, so when Hasan was born I intended to name him Harb. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, however, named him Hasan. Then, when Husayn was born, I again wished to name him Harb, but he named him Husayn and said, ‘Indeed I have named these two sons of mine after the two sons of Aaron: Shabbar and Shabbir’ (3).”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl transmitted from Muḥammad ibn ʿAli, from his father, that:
“He had named his eldest son Hamzah and had named Husayn after his uncle Jaʿfar. The Prophet ﷺ summoned him and said, ‘I have changed the names of these two sons of mine.’ He then named them Hasan and Husayn (4).”
