of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his grandson, and the master of the youth of Paradise: Abū Muḥammad al-Qurashī al-Hāshimī al-Madanī, the martyr.
His birth took place in Shaʿbān of the third year AH; it is also said that he was born in the middle of Ramadan that same year.
His grandfather offered the ʿaqīqah sacrifice on his behalf with a ram. (1)
He preserved hadith from his grandfather, and likewise from his father and mother.
Among those who transmitted from him are: his son al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan, Suwayd ibn Ghafalah, Abū al-Ḥawrāʾ al-Saʿdī (2), al-Shaʿbī, Hubayrah ibn Yarīm, Aṣbagh ibn Nubātah, and al-Musayyab ibn Najabah.
He closely resembled his grandfather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—so said Abū Juḥayfah. (3)
Ahmad [ibn Ḥanbal] related: Ghundar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us: I heard Burayd ibn Abī Maryam report from Abū al-Ḥawrāʾ:
I asked al-Hasan, “What do you remember of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?”
He replied, “I remember taking a date from the pile of charity dates and putting it in my mouth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ removed it—its saliva still on it—and returned it to the dates.
Someone said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what harm would that single date have done this child?’ He answered, ‘We—the family of Muḥammad—are not permitted to partake of charity.’
He also used to say, ‘Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt, for truth brings tranquillity while falsehood breeds doubt.’
And he would teach us this supplication recited in the qunūt: ‘O Allah, guide me among those You have guided…,’ to the end of the hadith. (4)
