Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Hishām ibn Saʿd narrated from Abū Jaʿfar the Qur’an reciter:
“I set out from Mecca with Ibn ʿUmar. He had a large dish of tharīd (bread soaked in broth) around which his sons, his companions, and everyone who happened to arrive would gather—so many that some of them ate while standing. He also had a camel carrying two waterskins containing nabīdh and water, and every man received a cup of sawīq mixed with that nabīdh.” (1)

It is also reported from Ibn ʿUmar that he used to eat chicken, small birds, and khabīṣ (date pudding).

Maʿn reported from Mālik that it reached him that Ibn ʿUmar said, “Even if the entire community assembled against me except for two men, I would not fight them.”

Salām ibn Miskīn said: I heard al-Ḥasan relate, “When ʿUthmān was killed, the people said to Ibn ʿUmar, ‘You are the leader of the people and the son of their leader. Go out, and the people will pledge allegiance to you.’

He replied, ‘If I can help it, not even a drop of blood the size of a cupping-bowl will be shed because of me.’

They said, ‘You must go out, or you will be killed in your bed!’

He repeated his statement.” (2)

Al-Ḥasan remarked, “They tried to lure him with promise and threaten him with fear, but they achieved nothing with him.”

This Imām’s biography in Ibn Saʿd’s Ṭabaqāt is lengthy—thirty-eight folios in all. (3)

We now turn to his contemporaries.
