Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Masʿūd, Ibn ʿAbbās, and Zayd ibn Thābit—making a total of seven only, and the legal opinions of each one of them could be compiled into a sizeable tome.

Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn Yaʿqūb, son of the Commander of the Faithful al-Maʾmūn, gathered the fatwas of Ibn ʿAbbās into twenty separate volumes, and this Abū Bakr is counted among the leading imams of Islam.

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī reported: ʿUthmān ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, that on the day ʿUthmān was killed Ibn ʿUmar strapped on ʿUmar’s sword. It was ornamented, and its embellishment alone was worth four hundred.

Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkari narrated—from Ibrāhīm al-Ṣāʾigh, from Nāfiʿ—that Ibn ʿUmar possessed books which he would consult before going out to the people. This report is singular.

In the Musnad of Baqī there are 2,633 hadiths from Ibn ʿUmar, counting repetitions; al-Bukhārī and Muslim both agree on 168 of them. Al-Bukhārī alone relates 81, while Muslim alone relates 31.

His children by Ṣafiyyah bint Abī ʿUbayd ibn Masʿūd al-Thaqafī were: Abū Bakr, Wāqid, ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿUbaydah, ʿUmar, Ḥafṣah, and Sawdah. By Umm ʿAlqamah al-Muḥāribiyyah he had ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from whom his kunya is taken. By one bondwoman he had Sālim, ʿUbayd Allāh, and Ḥamzah; by another, Zayd and ʿĀʾishah; by another, Abū Salamah and Qilābah; and by yet another, Bilāl—making sixteen in all.

Abū Mijlaz relates from Ibn ʿUmar that he said: “Stay away from me, for I used to accompany someone more knowledgeable than I am. Had I known that I would live until you became dependent on me, I would have sought knowledge for your sake.”
