the Hereafter a punishment far more severe and degrading.
May Allah be pleased with Ibn ʿUmar and with his father. Where can one find the like of Ibn ʿUmar in his religion, scrupulous piety, knowledge, devotion, and fear of Allah? Here was a man to whom the caliphate was offered—and he declined it; the office of judge was pressed upon him by someone as eminent as ʿUthmān—and he refused it; even the deputy-governorship of al-Shām was extended to him by ʿAlī—and he escaped from it altogether!
Allah selects for Himself whom He wills and guides to Him whoever turns back to Him.
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated from ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“Were it not that Muʿāwiyah is in al-Shām, I would have loved to go to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) and commence a ʿumrah from there. But I dislike to travel to al-Shām and then not call on him, for he would take offence; or to visit him, and he might think I am trying to obtain what is in his hand.”
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād narrated from Nāfiʿ:
Whenever Ibn ʿUmar missed the ʿIshāʾ in congregation, he would spend the whole night in worship. (1)
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim related: Ibn Jābir told us; Sulaymān ibn Mūsā told me, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar:
He would enliven the night with prayer, then say, “O Nāfiʿ, has the pre-dawn time arrived?”
I would reply, “No.”
He would resume the prayer until I said, “Yes.”
He would then sit, seek forgiveness, and supplicate until daybreak. (2)
Ṭāwūs said: “I have never seen anyone in prayer who faced the qiblah with his face, palms, and feet more squarely than Ibn ʿUmar.” (3)
Nāfiʿ also reported that Ibn ʿUmar used to spend the time between Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr in worship. (4)
Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī narrated from al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazzah that Ibn ʿUmar once recited and, when he reached the words: “On the Day…,”
