Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

his age would therefore come to eighty-five years—may Allah be pleased with him and grant him His good pleasure.

Ayyūb ibn Ṭāriq and Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad—both of whom read the text to me—reported:

Abū al-Qāsim ibn Rawāḥah narrated to us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Salafī narrated to us; and Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Ṭuraythīthī (1), Abū Yāsir Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū al-Qāsim al-Rabaʿī, and Abū Manṣūr al-Khayyāṭ likewise said:

ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Fākihī in Mecca—353—related to us; Abū Yaḥyā ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Masarrah (2) narrated to us; Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq—grandson of Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl through his daughter—said:

“I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī ʿUthmān say, ‘I saw Ibn ʿUmar clipping his moustache right down and I saw him slaughter the sacrificial camels while they were standing, stabbing them in the hollow at the base of their necks.’ (3)”

Ishāq al-Asadī informed us; Ibn Khalīl informed us; al-Labbān informed us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad informed us; Abū Kāmil narrated to us; Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us; from Hilāl ibn Khabbāb, from Qazaʿah, who said:

“I saw Ibn ʿUmar wearing coarse—or perhaps rough—clothing. I said to him, ‘I have brought you a soft garment of the kind woven in Khurāsān, and it would delight my eyes to see you wearing it.’

“He said, ‘Show it to me.’

“He felt it with his hand and asked, ‘Is this silk?’

“I replied, ‘No, it is cotton.’

“He said, ‘I am afraid to wear it; I fear I might become swaggering and boastful. And Allah does not love every swaggering braggart.’ (4)"}

(1) Al-Turaythithi – the name is pronounced with u on the first t, a on the r, sukun on the first y, i on the th, then sukun on the second y, followed by a voiced th (thā’). It derives from Turaythith, a sizeable district of the region of Nishapur. The printed edition corrupts it to “al-Tarthithi.” (2) In the printed edition the name is wrongly given as “Maysara.” (3) In the printed edition the verb is wrongly rendered “yujafi.” (4) The report is recorded in Hilyat al-Awliya’, 1/302. All its transmitters are trustworthy, except that Hilal ibn Khabbab’s reliability weakened in his later years. The term al-jashb, when applied to clothing, refers to garments that are rough and thick.
