The first migration to Abyssinia, followed by the second:
Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī relates in his History: Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm told me; he said: Bashshār ibn Mūsā al-Khuffāf narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥasan ibn Ziyād al-Barjumī—the imām of the mosque of Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ—related to us; he said: Qatādah reported, “The first person to emigrate to Allah with his family was ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān.”
Qatādah added: “I heard al-Naḍr ibn Anas say, ‘I heard Abū Ḥamzah—that is, Anas ibn Mālik—say: ʿUthmān set out with Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to Abyssinia. News of them was slow in coming, until a woman from Quraysh arrived and said, ‘O Muḥammad, I have seen your son-in-law together with his wife.’ He asked, ‘In what condition did you see them?’ She replied, ‘I saw him carrying his wife on one of these dabābah donkeys (a sturdy breed), while he himself was leading it.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘May Allah keep them in His care. ʿUthmān is indeed the first to emigrate with his wife after Lot.’”
Yahyā ibn Abī Ṭālib also transmitted this report from Bashshār.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs related: Ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; he said: al-Zuhrī informed me, on the authority of Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ʿUrwah, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr—and I completed the report from Abū Bakr—from Umm Salamah, who said: “When we were ordered to depart for Abyssinia, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, upon seeing the persecution that was befalling us, said, ‘Head for the land of Abyssinia, for there is a king there under whose rule no one is wronged. Remain in his land until…’”
