He replied, “The man you ordered to carry arms in a place where it is unlawful to do so ⦗1⦘.”
Ahmad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Masʿūdī related: Isḥāq ibn Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr al-Umawī narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar:
Ibn ʿUmar once rose to al-Ḥajjāj while he was delivering a sermon and cried out, “Enemy of Allah! The sacred precinct of Allah has been violated and the House of Allah has been laid waste.”
Al-Ḥajjāj retorted, “An old man who has lost his wits!”
When the people dispersed, al-Ḥajjāj ordered one of his black-clad guards. The guard took a poisoned spear, struck Ibn ʿUmar’s leg with it, and Ibn ʿUmar fell ill and later died from the wound. Al-Ḥajjāj came in to visit him, offered greetings, but Ibn ʿUmar did not return them; he spoke to him, yet received no reply ⦗2⦘.
Hishām reports, from Ibn Sirīn:
Al-Ḥajjāj once preached, declaring, “Ibn al-Zubayr has altered the word of Allah.” When Ibn ʿUmar heard of this, he said, “He lies! Neither Ibn al-Zubayr could change the word of Allah, nor can you.”
Al-Ḥajjāj answered, “You are an old man—senile already!”
Ibn ʿUmar retorted, “Know that if you repeat it, I shall repeat my response.”
Al-Aswad ibn Shaybān said: Khālid ibn Sumayr narrated to us:
Al-Ḥajjāj delivered a sermon and proclaimed, “Ibn al-Zubayr has tampered with the Book of Allah.”
Ibn ʿUmar shouted, “You lie, you lie! He is incapable of that—and so are you!”
Al-Ḥajjāj said, “Silence! You have become senile; your mind is gone. Soon an old man will have his neck struck, will collapse with his testicles swollen, and the children of al-Baqīʿ will drag him around ⦗3⦘.”
