Hammād ibn Zayd, on the authority of Ayyūb, from Nāfiʿ:
Muʿāwiyah sent Ibn ʿUmar one hundred thousand; when he then wanted him to give the oath of allegiance to Yazīd, Ibn ʿUmar said, “I can see what he is after; were I to accept, my religion would be cheap indeed.” (1)
Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir said: When Yazīd was acknowledged as ruler and the report reached Ibn ʿUmar, he remarked, “If it proves good, we shall be content; if it turns into a trial, we shall endure with patience.” (2)
Ibn ʿUlayyah, from Abū ʿAwn, from Nāfiʿ, related:
“Muʿāwiyah swore from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he would certainly kill Ibn ʿUmar—while Ibn ʿUmar was then in Mecca. ʿAbdallāh ibn Ṣafwān went to him; they entered a house and I remained at the door while Ibn Ṣafwān kept saying, ‘Will you leave him until he kills you?! By Allah, even if only I and the people of my household were left, I would fight him in your defence.’
Ibn ʿUmar replied, ‘Shall I not take refuge in the Sacred Sanctuary of Allah?’ I heard him sob twice. When Muʿāwiyah drew near, Ibn Ṣafwān went out to meet him and said, ‘Hey! (3) You have come to kill Ibn ʿUmar.’
Muʿāwiyah answered, ‘By Allah, I will not kill him.’ (4)
Misʿar, from Abū Ḥuṣayn, reported:
“Muʿāwiyah said, ‘Who has a better claim to this authority than we do?’ while Ibn ʿUmar was present. I wanted to retort, ‘More entitled to it than you is the one who struck you and your father for its sake,’ but I feared turmoil. (5)
Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father, and Ibn Ṭāwūs, from ʿIkrimah ibn Khālid, from Ibn ʿUmar, said:
‘I came in to Ḥafṣah while the ends of her hair were still dripping…’
