Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd said: It was said to Nāfiʿ, “What did Ibn ʿUmar do when he was at home?”
He replied, “You would not be able to keep up with him: he would renew his ablution for every prayer, and between them he was with the mushaf (his personal copy of the Quran). (1)
This was also transmitted by Abū Shihāb al-Ḥannāṭ (2) from Ḥabīb.
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād narrated from Nāfiʿ that whenever Ibn ʿUmar missed the congregational ʿIshāʾ prayer, he would spend the rest of the night in worship. (3)
Ibn al-Mubārak reported: ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Zayd told us—my father told us—that Ibn ʿUmar kept beside him a stone vessel filled with water. He would pray as much as Allah enabled him, then go to his bed and doze like a bird; he would then rise, perform ablution, and pray again, repeating this four or five times during the night. (4)
Nāfiʿ said: Ibn ʿUmar would not fast while travelling, yet when resident he was rarely seen not fasting.
Ibn Shihāb related from Sālim: Ibn ʿUmar never cursed a servant of his except once, and he set that servant free.
Abū l-Zubayr al-Makkī narrated from ʿAṭāʾ, the client of Ibn Sibāʿ, who said: “I lent Ibn ʿUmar two thousand dirhams, and he repaid me with an extra two hundred.” (5)
