Ibn Sīrīn said, “The engraving on Ibn ʿUmar’s signet ring read: ‘ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar’.” (1)
Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir remarked, “Whenever Ibn ʿUmar heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would neither add a word to it nor omit a word from it; in that respect no one equalled him.”
Abū al-Malīḥ al-Raqqī reported from Maymūn that Ibn ʿUmar said, “I kept my hand back, and I have never regretted it; the one who fights for the truth, however, is superior.”
He added, “I once entered Ibn ʿUmar’s house and appraised all the furnishings in it; their total value did not reach one hundred dirhams.” (2)
Ibn Wahb narrated from Mālik, from someone who informed him, that Ibn ʿUmar used to follow the commands, traces, and conduct of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so meticulously—and was so absorbed in that pursuit—that people feared for his sanity.
Khārijah ibn Muṣʿab related, on the authority of Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Nāfiʿ: “Had you seen Ibn ʿUmar while he was trailing the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, you would have said, ‘This man is out of his mind.’” (3)
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar, through Nāfiʿ, reported that Ibn ʿUmar would follow every place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed. When the Prophet ﷺ once alighted beneath a certain tree, Ibn ʿUmar continued to visit that tree, pouring water at its base so that it would not wither. (4)
Nāfiʿ also transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If only we left this door for the women.” Nāfiʿ added, “Ibn ʿUmar never entered through that door until the day he died.” (5)
